Bay View Farm — A Legacy Restored

Nestled between Kei Mouth and Morgan’s Bay in the beautiful Eastern Cape, Bay View Farm is a historic Cape Dutch-style estate with a remarkable story of heritage, decline and renewal. Surrounded by mature trees, expansive gardens and spectacular valley views, the farm has evolved from a grand country estate into a vibrant destination for hospitality, celebrations and country living.

A Rich History

The story of Bay View Farm stretches back to the Oppenheimer family, who purchased the property and developed three of its most distinctive buildings: The Gables, The Tranquil Cottage and The Bush Camp. During its heyday, the estate was a place of grandeur and entertainment, with The Gables serving as a magnificent gallery and, in a later chapter, an ambitious attempt at establishing a casino. When the necessary casino licence could not be secured, the building was transformed into a ballroom, where dances and social gatherings were enjoyed to the sounds of live bands.

The farm's gardens also carry a special family legacy. As a young man, newly married to Daphne (née Hawks), John Jeffries lived at The Bush Camp and was commissioned to lay out the gardens. He went on to plant many of the estate's mature trees, including the magnificent Yellowwood trees that still grace the grounds today. These trees stand as a living testament to the care and foresight that shaped the property generations ago.

Following the passing of Miss Oppenheimer, the farm was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair. The once-grand buildings and grounds suffered extensive vandalism and neglect during a period of occupation by various tenants. Although a group of four men, including Leon Delport and Mr Gravette, subsequently purchased the property, much of its former character had already been lost.

It was during this period that a local connection to the estate's past helped preserve an important part of its heritage. A visit by Dave Bradfield and a friend to assess whether the cottage could be rented revealed that the building was unfortunately beyond a practical state of repair. During the visit, they also discovered that the two sets of magnificent double doors leading into what is now the main venue area had been removed and placed in storage, apparently to prevent them from being stolen. When Kenneth Tucker later embarked on his ambitious restoration of Bayview Farm, the doors were returned to their rightful place, reclaiming their position of honour within the historic building.

A Vision Reborn

Recognising the property's extraordinary potential, Kenneth Tucker undertook the remarkable task of restoring Bay View Farm to its former glory—and taking it even further. The restoration sought to honour the estate's architectural character and historical significance while creating a welcoming, modern destination for visitors and the local community.

The project breathed new life into a neglected landmark, carefully bringing its buildings, gardens and gathering spaces back into use. Original architectural features and treasured historical elements were preserved wherever possible, allowing the farm's past to remain an integral part of its future.
